During the self-exclusion period, bets were not allowed to be placed, but once the period ended, the accounts were able to resume full activity. One player even placed over 1,200 wagers after their self-exclusion period ended, which is a clear violation of the Interactive Gambling Act.
ACMA’s response and Unibet’s actions
Carolyn Lidgerwood, the ACMA’s Gambling Lead, expressed serious concerns about Unibet’s actions, stating that taking up to 190 days to close accounts is unacceptable. As part of the penalty, Unibet has entered into a two-year court-enforceable undertaking with the ACMA to undergo an independent review of its internal compliance systems. The company has also promised to implement all recommended improvements and refund the affected customers.
Previous breaches and market entry
This is not the first time Unibet has been penalized for breaching gambling laws in Australia. In 2021, the company entered the Australian market by acquiring Betchoice, an online bookmaker based in the Northern Territory state. In May 2023, Unibet was fined AU$60,000 for breaching state gambling laws by offering ‘inducements’ to gamble or open betting accounts through its promotional activities.
Unibet’s promotional offers, such as ‘price push’ deals with boosted odds, were found to encourage gambling activity, which is against Australian law. Betchoice pleaded guilty to the offences, paid fines, and covered the costs of the investigation.
