LNW Gaming to Shut Down Michigan Facility, Resulting in Layoffs
LNW Gaming, a subsidiary of Light & Wonder, has recently announced its decision to close down a facility located in Michigan. This closure will unfortunately lead to the layoffs of approximately 100 employees, as reported in a filing by the company.
Layoffs on the Horizon
According to a WARN notice submitted to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity in February, the facility at 22630 Haggerty Road in Farmington Hills, Michigan, is scheduled to cease operations next month. LNW Gaming has confirmed that the venue will be permanently closed, resulting in the necessity for employee layoffs.
LNW Gaming has stated that around 92 employees will be laid off due to the shutdown of the Michigan facility. The layoffs are set to commence on April 27th and will impact a diverse range of workers, including entry operators, game show presenters, managers, supervisors, and trainers.
The company has clarified that the affected workers are not unionized, and there will be no bumping rights granted to any employee during this process.
Legal Setback for LNW Gaming
Recently, LNW Gaming faced legal challenges in Nevada, where a judge ruled in favor of the plaintiff in a case against the company.
The lawsuit was brought forth by Talisman Group, represented by the boutique law firm Bailey Kennedy based in Las Vegas. The dispute arose from LNW’s violation of an existing distribution agreement for the popular baccarat product EZ Baccarat.
LNW Gaming had provided EZ Baccarat for the British Columbia Lottery Corporation while simultaneously promoting a competing no-commission baccarat game called Ruyi Baccarat. The judge sided with Talisman, agreeing that LNW Gaming had breached its contract with the group.
Although this legal battle is ongoing and will continue in Vancouver, Talisman’s legal team expressed satisfaction with the initial outcome, especially considering their status as a small two-person gaming company challenging a major player in the industry.
Light & Wonder’s Exit from Live Casino Market
In a significant development, Light & Wonder’s parent company has announced its exit from the live-dealer iGaming market. This decision was revealed during a recent earnings call, leaving Evolution and Playtech as the only two remaining live casino suppliers in the US.
The management of Light & Wonder stated that they will shift their focus to other products that offer better visibility and higher returns compared to live casino gaming.
