Caution for Floridians
The executive director of the FGCC, Ross Marshman, highlighted Florida’s strict gaming regulations and limited legal gaming businesses in the state. He mentioned that the only lawful online sportsbook in Florida is Hard Rock Bet, managed by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Marshman urged Floridians to exercise caution when participating in any form of betting, emphasizing the risks involved.
Contribution to State Economy
The FGCC emphasized that illegal gambling operators do not contribute to the state’s economy, unlike legal gaming operations that generate crucial tax revenue. In 2024, the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund of Florida received over $240 million in tax revenue from state-licensed slot machine businesses. The Seminole Tribe of Florida is expected to contribute at least $2.5 billion to the state over the next five years.

Other states, like Michigan, have also taken action against illegal gambling operators. The Michigan Gaming Control Board issued a cease-and-desist notice to MyBookie, while Bovada has withdrawn from several states, including New Hampshire, due to regulatory pressure. Prosecutors, law enforcement officers, and the FGCC have stressed the need to amend existing laws to address the issue of illegal betting operations effectively in Florida.
